§12.1 Four aims, one frame

The corpus is not exclusively metaphysical. A very large part of it addresses the conduct of life, under a fourfold scheme of human aims: dharma, right conduct; artha, material acquisition and power; kāma, desire and its satisfaction; mokṣa, liberation. Each has its own technical literature, written in the register appropriate to its aim — the Artha-śāstra is coldly instrumental because acquisition is a cold and instrumental subject.

The tradition's answer to how these relate is unambiguous and is stated in the Bhāgavata's own opening argument: the first three aims are legitimate but subordinate, and are pursued rightly only insofar as they are governed by dharma and oriented, finally, beyond themselves. A famous formulation holds that dharma performed excellently for any purpose other than the pleasure of the Lord is only so much labour.

In the Gauḍīya and Mādhva traditions, pure transcendental loving service (prema-bhakti) is recognised as a fifth aim (pañcama-puruṣārtha) that contains and transcends the liberation of the fourth.

§12.2 The containment rule

This rule has an unglamorous but important consequence for a platform: we do not sanitise these texts. The Artha-śāstra contains detailed advice on espionage, assassination, and the management of information that a modern reader will find cold. The Kāma-sūtra is a technical treatise on erotics with the frankness of a technical treatise. Presenting either in bowdlerised form would falsify the corpus and would also falsify the containment rule, which only means something if the contained material is presented as it is. The platform's editorial responsibility is accurate presentation with the frame stated, not the manufacture of a corpus that never embarrasses anyone.
